VeraTherm stays stable at 191°C, a quiet edge as superhot drilling ramps
Most investors tracking the geothermal boom are watching the power companies. The smarter place to look may be the firm mixing the fluid that keeps the drill bit from destroying itself.

Sound good?
SLB (NYSE: SLB) says it has deployed its aqueous geothermal drilling fluids in more than 100 wells since 2015. Its flagship product, VeraTherm, is a high-temperature water-based system designed to deliver stable performance at high temperatures with minimal treatment. In a Middle East field case, SLB reported the fluid remained stable for seven days at 375°F (191°C), enabling wireline logging without conditioning trips for that period.
That sounds like a detail. It is actually the bottleneck.
Standard mud motors and directional electronics can fail at elevated temperatures. SLB says non-high-temperature electronics can fail after just six hours above 200°C. For ultrahigh-temperature reservoirs, operators may turn to tools like SLB’s PowerDrive ICE rotary steerable system and TeleScope ICE measurements-while-drilling service, which SLB has marketed as rated to 200°C. The fluid’s job, in part, is to help manage temperatures around the bottom-hole assembly enough to keep downhole components functional.

The industry is running straight into that wall. In September 2026, Hephae Energy Technology announced its Pandora210 measurement-while-drilling system had operated at 210°C circulating temperature in the field, describing it as a next-generation geothermal milestone. The IEA, in its February 2026 The State of Energy Innovation 2026 report, highlighted progress in next-generation geothermal among notable energy-innovation developments. The Clean Air Task Force has said that tapping just 1% of the world’s superhot rock energy potential could generate about 63 terawatts of clean firm power, enough to meet global electricity demand in 2021 nearly eight times over.
SLB is not a bystander. The company partnered with Ormat Technologies in October 2025 to accelerate integrated geothermal asset development and enhanced geothermal systems. It also sells geothermal well-construction and monitoring offerings, including drilling services and fiber-optic-related capabilities.
The core business is under pressure. SLB reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $9.45 billion, up 6% year on year. In its third-quarter 2026 release, SLB said ChampionX contributed about $970 million of revenue to its Core business in the quarter. SLB also said Well Construction revenue decreased 3% year on year, citing the lingering impact of Middle East conflict-related disruptions and lower unconventional activity in Argentina. That cyclical pressure is exactly why the geothermal pivot matters: it converts the same subsurface expertise and chemical manufacturing capacity into a market whose clients are utilities and governments rather than hydrocarbon producers.
Silver & Gold Spark Breakout on This US$1 Discovery Stock
Silver and gold are obliterating records as capital floods back into early-stage discovery stocks positioned for the next explosive leg higher in 2026-27. One under-the-radar North American silver-gold firm – trading undiscovered below US$1 per share – is leading that shift. The company has unified an entire historic district for the first time, unlocking modern drilling across vast, mineral-rich ground. Phase-2 drilling is underway with initial results confirming high-grade silver-gold mineralization.
The risk is timing. Superhot rock drilling above 375°C remains early-stage, and the toughest environments demand materials, tool designs, and temperature-management approaches that are still being proven. Bridging the gap requires either new chemistry or fundamentally different cooling architectures, and the company is not the only one working on it.
But SLB has something startups lack: a track record it says includes more than 100 deployed geothermal wells since 2015, a commercial supply chain, and a sales force already inside many major geothermal operators. The fluid is not glamorous. In a capital-intensive technology race, the firm that already has the product in the ground tends to win the next contract.
