Shopify Turned ChatGPT Into a Checkout Counter

September 11, 2026

AI-driven orders on Shopify stores rose nearly thirteenfold in Q1. The checkout rail is the real prize.

Most investors heard “AI checkout” and pictured a chatbot answering product questions. Shopify had something more consequential in mind: owning the transaction layer of every AI-assisted purchase on the internet.

At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference this week, Shopify argued that new AI-driven discovery tools are changing how shoppers find products, but that transactions still flow through Shopify’s platform. That distinction matters enormously for shareholders. Discovery without the checkout is just advertising. Discovery with the checkout is a payments business.

Shopify’s agentic commerce push connects merchant catalogs, AI shopping assistants, and Shopify Checkout so buyers can discover products through ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Mode and Gemini without starting at a traditional storefront. The numbers behind this shift are striking. Shopify says referral sessions from AI chatbots to Shopify storefronts grew more than eightfold year over year as of Q1 2026, and that orders attributed to AI-powered search rose nearly thirteenfold.

Shopify Payments processed about $67 billion of gross payments volume in Q1 2026, up 41% year over year, with Shop Pay processing about $35 billion, up 59%. Those figures predate much of the agentic rollout. If AI assistants begin routing a meaningful slice of incremental buyers into Shopify-controlled checkout flows, the payment volumes become a compounding story rather than a linear one.

Shopify has said it has been investing for nearly two years in building out its commerce index, distilling about 20 years of commerce experience and more than one billion products for AI agents. President Harley Finkelstein has described Catalog as a critical asset for agents. That data advantage is not easy to replicate. A new entrant cannot conjure a decade of structured merchant inventory overnight.

There is a genuine friction point, though. Visa CEO Ryan McInerney said this week that consumer adoption is growing for AI-assisted shopping but not yet for autonomous payments, and that the barrier, in his words, comes down to trust. In a Visa/Harris Poll readout, 23% of U.S. consumers said they trust GenAI to handle payment transactions on their behalf. Shopify’s bet is that its established checkout experience, combined with Shop Pay’s familiarity, bridges that trust gap faster than a standalone AI interface could.

Executives have acknowledged rising costs tied to large language models and the early stage of agentic commerce, but Shopify has also said AI-referred shoppers are converting well on its merchants’ storefronts.

For investors, the core question is not whether AI changes shopping behavior. It already has. The question is who captures the margin when a conversation becomes a cart. Shopify’s argument is that the platform that owns the plumbing between intent and checkout gets to define the next storefront. Given the payment volume data, that argument deserves serious weight. The risk is timing: agentic commerce could scale quickly or stall on consumer hesitation, and Shopify’s LLM costs are real expenses today against revenues that are still materializing.

Merchants on the platform benefit regardless of who wins the AI-assistant wars. Products can surface directly within AI responses, and for eligible merchants, Shopify-powered direct checkout can let buyers complete purchases within certain AI channels or flow into the merchant’s existing Shopify checkout. That keeps merchant data inside Shopify’s ecosystem and the revenue on Shopify’s rails. The checkout counter moved. Shopify moved with it.
